Johnny Depp files to appeal Amber Heard’s  million defamation compensation

Johnny Depp He filed documents Wednesday to appeal a Virginia court ruling that one of Depp’s lawyers defamed his ex-wife, Amber Heard.

Depp was awarded $10.35 million in damages after a jury found Heard slandering Depp after a Six weeks trial.

In documents reviewed by Fox News Digital, Depp said the court “should overturn the ruling on Ms. Heard’s counterclaim,” but he was in favor of the jury’s decision otherwise.

“The upholding jury’s verdict on all three alleged defamatory statements in his complaint fully validated Mr. Depp and restored his reputation,” the documents said.

“However, the lower court faced a number of new and complex legal and factual issues, and although the lower court decided the vast majority of these cases reasonably and correctly, some rulings were erroneous.”

Heard claimed Depp was “indirectly responsible” for statements his attorney made to a tabloid newspaper in 2020, a point the jury agreed upon when awarding her $2 million after the trial.

His attorneys argued in Depp’s appeal that attorney Adam Waldman was retained as an independent contractor and that Depp was not responsible for his statements.

Another sticking point was the proof that Waldman acted with “real malice”.

The documents stated that “no evidence of the actual malice of Mr Waldman was presented at trial, and therefore the verdict against Mr. Depp cannot be supported”.

Depp’s team also argued that Waldman’s words were “an unenforceable and insufficient statement of opinion to support an allegation of defamation”.

Less than a month after sentencing, I heard File an appeal notice to overturn the ruling.

“We believe the court made errors that prevented a fair and equitable ruling consistent with the First Amendment. We are therefore appealing the ruling,” Heard’s spokesman said in a statement.

A spokesperson for Depp said there was no basis for Heard’s appeal.

“The jury heard the extensive evidence presented during the six-week trial and came to a clear and unanimous verdict that the defendant herself had distorted Mr. Depp in several cases,” one representative said. “We remain confident in our case and that this ruling will remain,” he added.
