U.S. stock futures were steady on Sunday evening, with modest gains, after President Biden addressed the nation in the wake of the shooting of former President Donald Trump, who escaped with minor injuries at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. The shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by law enforcement.
In his 8 p.m. ET address, which lasted just about 10 minutes, Biden urged the country to lower the temperature in what has become a nation deeply divided over politics, while also offering Trump his well wishes and prayers. He stressed that the investigation is ongoing and that the motive behind the assassination attempt remains unclear.
As the Republican National Convention kicks off tomorrow, Biden has said he will campaign on his own to promote his administration’s record as we head into the November election.
Additionally, investors will continue to digest events over the weekend heading into a full week of earnings as the second-quarter reporting season heats up with Charles Schwab, Goldman Sachs and Amex set to release results.
U.S. stocks were on a tear with the Dow Jones Industrial Average crossing 40,000 while the S&P 500 hovering near an all-time high as the market braces for a possible interest rate cut as early as September after cold CPI inflation data last week.
