Several families find themselves on the street after fires ripped through two apartment buildings in Montreal’s Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie and Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve boroughs early Monday morning.
The first fire broke out around 2 a.m. on the 2nd floor of a five-unit building on avenue de Gaspé near rue de Bellechasse.
The occupants of the building were evacuated by a hundred firefighters from the Montreal Fire Department (SIM), who were mobilized to battle the flames.
The Red Cross was called to the scene, and at least two families had to be relocated due to water damage from the holes, Sim’s spokesman said.

Within an hour of the first fire, Simm was alerted to another large fire that engulfed a three-story apartment building in Mercier County.
The fire broke out in an apartment on the top floor of a building located on Sherbrooke Street East near Curatteau Street, SIM said.

Residents were evacuated and no one was injured, while the Société de Transport de Montréal (STM) made buses available to them while they waited for the Red Cross.
