BOSTON — Ty France will not sign a free agent contract with any team that could compete with the Mariners for the American League West title or a wild card spot.
The team on Monday sent France and some money to the Reds in exchange for minor league outfielder Andrew Salcedo.
A Major League Baseball source confirmed that the Mariners will only receive a portion of the remaining $6.775 million in France’s contract, while the Reds will pay the rest.
After placing France on direct waivers, the Mariners designated France for assignment last week. Under the collective bargaining agreement, Seattle had seven days to trade France. After the seven days, he could have been placed on waivers where another team could claim him.
If France had obtained other waivers, they could have granted him the right to move to the second division. France could have declined the outright assignment because of his accumulated time in MLB service, and become a free agent. He could have signed with the Astros or Red Sox.
Salcedo, 21, has made seven starts during the 2024 season with the Daytona Class A team.
Salcedo was signed as an international free agent out of Sincelejo, Colombia in 2019 and is in his fourth minor league season with the Reds organization. He has posted a slash line of .246/.347/.330 during those seasons.
