Mark Sheehan: Script guitarist and co-founder dies at 46
Tributes are pouring in from across the music industry in the wake of the passing of The Script co-founder and guitarist Mark Sheehan.
The Irish musician passed away after a short illness at the age of 46.
“Husband, father, brother, bandmate and friend Mark Sheehan passed away today in hospital after a short illness,” the band said in a statement on Friday (April 14).
“The family and group ask fans to respect their privacy at this tragic time.”
Lead singer Danny O’Donoghue and Sheehan were best friends growing up in Dublin before forming the rock band in 2001 with the addition of drummer Glen Power.
They released their eponymous debut album in August 2008, which included the singles “The Man Who Couldn’t Move” and “Breakven”.
After six studio albums, the band released a Greatest Hits compilation album in 2021.

Why did Sheehan take a break from his career?
Lead vocalist Danny O’Donoghue announced last year that Sheehan was taking a break from The Script’s US tour to spend time with his family.
“It’s his story to tell, but yeah, I think if I can paraphrase, his kids need a father and his wife needs a husband,” said the singer.
It’s been the engine of The Script for a long time, [I told him] that “If you want to spend time with your family, you are more than welcome, and I insist you go and do it.”
He added that the group was supportive and described them as a “band of brothers” who “stick together no matter what”.

The President of Ireland issues a statement regarding Sheehan’s death
Irish President Michael D Higgins issued a statement regarding Sheehan’s death.
The book states: “All those who knew Mark Sheehan, and the millions of others who enjoyed and appreciated his music, will be deeply shocked to hear of his untimely passing.
It was a mark of originality and distinction that Mark and his colleagues at The Script have sought to bring them to such worldwide success, including their first six albums in the UK and their third album in the US – a truly remarkable feat.
“It was a great honor and privilege to have the opportunity to host Mark and The Script when they performed at Áras an Uachtaráin in 2013 as part of my Glaoch – The President’s Call initiative, which celebrated Irish creativity, its spread and influence across the world.
Through their music, Mark and The Script have played a prominent role in continuing and enhancing this proud tradition of Irish musical success around the world.
“While Mark will be missed by many, it is of course his family who will face the greatest loss. Let me express my deepest condolences to Mark’s wife Rena, to his children Cameron, Avery and Lil, to his bandmates, and to all of his family and friends.”
The president concluded with an Irish phrase, “suaimhneas síoraí dá anam,” which means “eternal peace to his soul.”

Singer Ella Henderson posted a heartfelt tribute to Sheehan on Instagram after news of her death broke.

Fellow Irish playmaker Hosier shared his love for The Script on Instagram. Commenting on the post announcing Sheehan’s death, Hozier – real name Andrew Hozier Byrne – wrote: “So sad to hear this. Thinking of all of you and Mark’s family right now and sending love. My deepest condolences to all of you.”

All we know so far is that Sheehan passed away in hospital after a “brief illness.” He was 46 years old.

Many fans responded to The Script’s ad with their own anecdotes of meeting Sheehan.
“I’m so depressed to read this!!! I met you about 10 years ago in Dubai and we had the best night!! Don’t stop laughing he was such a sweet guy!! RIP Mark,” one fan wrote, along with a photo from the night.
“Heartbroken. I can never thank Mark enough for all he has done for me over the years. Thinking of you all!” wrote another.
Another person shared a selfie with the guitarist with the caption: “Oh he was so amazing. I will never forget meeting him in 2011!”
