Although it talks more about the early 1900s, Erivo still serves closer to a decade of Gilded Age than most have to date.
Brides Against the Hustle
Alex Gorman
Time for the old (gold-plated) question: What’s the difference between baskets and hustle?
Guardian Australia’s lifestyle editor Alex Gorman Explain:
Therefore, there are many types of large skirt that we are likely to see today. Baskets, like Chan, have most of their volume at the side, and tend to be made with a series of horizontal and vertical hoops to give her fit (imagine a hoop with hoops that go around her arms and waist, then drape under a skirt). Meanwhile, 19th-century crinolines tended to be made of horizontally placed collars, sewn along the length of the skirt in various sizes, to give shape (imagine a hopper circling three rings around her hips, knees, and ankles).
Meanwhile, the bustle, which can be worn in addition to the crinoline, gives the majority of its volume to the back of the dress. They can have structural features like tulle to help contribute to volume, or they can be made with layers, layers, and layers of fabric (imagine a ’60s beehive with plenty of teasing).
Movements tended to wear the top of a woman’s skirt, while panniers and crinolines were underwear.
A note to fashion historians: Princess Bridgerton-esque and pastel necklines actually fall into the Regency-era category—aka not the way to go for this year’s Golden Age theme.
When we hear the word ‘Gilded Glamor’, we want it all: puffed sleeves, puffy skirts, and lined plaids.
Finally, a hustle was made. Under a tuxedo.
