The Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) was alerted at 3:45 a.m. to a fire at a business located on rue Bernard Ouest near avenue de l’Esplanade.
When police arrived at the scene, firefighters from the Montreal Fire Department were already working to contain the blaze.
Residents of 2e and 3e SPVM spokesman Jean-Pierre Brabant said floors were evacuated, particularly due to smoke, but no one was injured.
According to witnesses interviewed by the SPVM, at least one suspect was seen throwing a flammable object and fleeing before the fire started.
The investigation into the fire, which caused substantial damage to the establishment, was transferred to the SPVM’s arson wing.
Investigators are expected to return to the scene on Monday morning to analyze the scene and try to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire, it added.
