Montrealers have paid nearly $ 12 million overtime to the Montreal Police, including trying to control the shooting waves in the summer of 2021.
By comparison, the bill was less than $ 7 million during the same period in the summer of 2020. This is information received by our Intelligence Bureau from the Information Access section.
Thus, at a crucial time when Montreal was experiencing an unprecedented crisis in terms of shootings, the police were forced to loosen their wallets. “It was scary,” said a police spokesman who did not have the authority to speak to the media.
Under the guidance of the Service de police de la Ville de Montreal (SPVM) it has been noted that the Stanley Cup playoffs also had a significant impact on bill increases. These extra overtime costs come at a time when there are at least 250 police officers in the SPVM.
Amid a commotion, police officers were asked if they agreed to interrupt their vacation to return to work and postpone it.
“They were paid 200% (of the regular salary) and were allowed to resume their vacations, even on days already taken,” a police source confirmed, adding that sometimes 300% was associated with time and money.
“It simply came to our notice then. He represents the exception, ”said Yves Francoeur, head of the SPVM Police Brotherhood.
He acknowledges that there have been “secret” agreements for many years between several supervisors and their police officers, but only in investigations.
These deals are intended to reduce cash payments as a result of overtime. However, they are not approved by management or the union.
“It has been known for a long time. This is a way to recoup the time we have given to SPVM,” a police source said, urging City to restrict SPVM management from paying more than 150% overtime in this context.
Disappointed, many police officers turn off their phones to avoid contact during their holidays, Yves Francoeur told us.
Adjacent stations must maintain a ratio of five to six-sixth of the staff at all times. By definition, if there are at least twelve people in the group, two patrolmen can take a vacation at the same time.
In the case of the survey, the situation is very worrying. During the months of July and August, groups often operate at 50% efficiency.
Listen to a news review of Philipe-Vincent Foisy and Alexandre Moranville-Ouellet on QUB Radio:
⁇ 150%
Hourly payment is made after hours.
⁇ 200%
Hourly fee paid to police officers who are recalled while on leave or vacation. SPVM avoids this procedure as much as possible.
⁇ 300% (confidential deals)
The police officer concludes the request for leave, but it is not calculated by his superior. In the list of daily employees, the guard appears on duty, but in reality he never returns to work.
Returning time to police officers is a disguised way. This can be equivalent to 200% simple time, and sometimes 300%.
However, these agreements are not generalized.
