The shooting took place overnight in the Plateau-Mont-Royal area of Montreal from Tuesday to Wednesday. The suspects were caught in the act of vehicle theft by SPVM patrol officers.
Patrolmen of the Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) surprised people trying to steal a vehicle on Avenue du Park near Rue Bernard Ouest around 1:35 a.m.
SPVM spokeswoman Sabrina Gauthier pointed out that some of the suspects ran away from the scene towards a vehicle that was waiting for them at the sight of the police.
In a panic, the vehicle collided with a patrol car before fleeing on northbound Avenue du Parc.
The other suspects then approached a second suspect vehicle that sped toward the patrol car. As the suspects were leaving, SPVM police officers heard a loud noise and opened fire on the suspects.
No one was injured in the shooting and no suspects have been arrested, but two suspicious vehicles are under intense search.
A command post was set up at the site while a canine unit was mobilized to assist in the search.
Avenue du Parc was closed in both directions between rue Bernard Ouest and rue Saint-Viateur Ouest, it added.
