Notable omission of Apple press release One of the Vision Pro entertainment apps earlier this week was Netflix. This suggests that the most popular streaming service was not planning to create a native app for headphones.
But it turns out that Netflix is less interested in supporting the new platform. In a statement to BloombergThe company confirmed that it does not plan to allow users to run the iPad version of its app on the Apple Vision Pro either.
Apple Vision Pro can run more than a million iPhone and iPad apps available in the App Store, in compatibility mode where the apps appear as small windows in the user's virtual space. However, developers can choose to opt out of this support. Through today's statement, Netflix confirmed it has opted out, directing customers to access the Netflix website through the Safari web browser.
Apple has acquired most of the other big streaming services, with some offering native VisionOS apps and others offering an out-of-the-box iPad app experience.
This means the Apple Vision Pro will run apps from Disney+, (HBO) Max, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+, Peacock, and more. Disney is also committed to streaming some of its films in 3D for the first time, giving Apple Vision Pro wearers a truly cinema-like experience for titles like Avatar.
Of course, the Apple TV app will naturally bring Apple's own streaming service, Apple TV+, to the headphones, including some new native Apple Immersive Video that enables a 180-degree 8K video experience that will only be available on the Apple Vision Pro. The App TV movie store will also include more than 150 3D titles at launch.
The Apple Vision Pro will go up for pre-order on Friday starting at $3,500. The first units will start shipping to customers from February 2nd. Apple is expected to sell only about 500,000 units in the first year, which means Netflix won't piss off a lot of customers by not participating. Maybe Netflix will reevaluate in a few years when Apple inevitably sells millions of VisionOS devices.
