OLED Breakthrough - New TVs Coming with 165Hz, Wi-Fi 7, and Faster AI

MediaTek has officially unveiled a brand new chip and it’s set to invite a world of future-proof OLED TVs that will offer some truly amazing specs.

The chip powering all the innovation is called the Pentonic 800 and will enable 165Hz VRR, enhanced AI processing, Wi-Fi 7, and much more.

MediaTek announced the new chip in Blog post Highlighting its more advanced internals which include an upgraded GPU, CPU, AI and co-processors, all of which will bring some of the newer OLED models that excite upgraders, among a slew of other improvements.

However, given its primary use case in Google TVs, it’s good to see this new SoC in 2025 models from Sony, TCL, and Hisense.

The AI chip of the future

Although you may not have heard of them before, Pentonic SoCs can be found in some… The best OLED TVswith the Sony Bravia A95L (pictured above) equipped with MediaTek’s Pentonic 1000 processor, while both 2023 and 2024 TCL TVs are equipped with the Pentonic 700. The chips are primarily a key component of Best Google TVs This is due in large part to high-quality software compatibility.

But the new Pentonic 800 is set to be a major upgrade, harnessing up to 50% faster processing and a 60% reduction in memory bandwidth. The new SoC has a 1.8GHz quad-core Arm Cortex-A73 CPU, an Arm Mali-G557 MC1 GPU, and 3200Mbps 64-bit DDR4 RAM.

MediaTek sees the Pentonic 800 as the pinnacle of super-resolution and image quality improvements, providing “near-perfect restoration of content or detail and removal of noise or artifacts from broadcast or Internet streams.” This will become possible thanks to an adapted AI engine with optimized parameters for object and scene recognition.

In addition to the AI improvements, the Pentonic 800 will offer 4K up to 165Hz VRR support. Currently, games are primarily ported to 144Hz on most TVs, with some newer models, e.g TCL QM8 Mini LEDAble to reach 240 VRR at lower resolution. The Pentonic 800 will allow you to game on 165Hz VRR and 4K TVs, but it will only be available when paired with a device. If that’s not enough, future TVs that use the Pentonic 800 will also support Wi-Fi 7, making them much more advanced than those currently using only Wi-Fi 6 vs Wi-Fi 6e. Wi-Fi 7 aims to provide more powerful wireless transmission capabilities, ensuring that data such as content streamed arrives faster and smoother on your TV.

No manufacturer has yet said it will use the 800 chip, but given the widespread adoption of previous MediaTek chipsets, it’s almost certain we’ll see it in future lineup(s) from Sony, TCL, and Hisense.
