One person was killed and 11 others were injured Friday afternoon when a bus traveling between Montreal and New York overturned on Highway 87 between Lake George and Warrensburg.
New York State Police said the crash happened on the Adirondack Northway, or Highway 87, around 12:43 p.m.
According to initial reports, the FlixBus coach was heading south from Montreal and was carrying 23 people, including the driver.
Law enforcement sources told NewsChannel 13 that one person was killed. State police said one person was flown to Albany Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.
10 others sustained minor injuries.
County Executive John Dufflan said the bus was mostly Canadians and some Swiss citizens who were about to fly home.
According to the 511 traffic site, all southbound lanes of the Adirondack Northway are closed between exits 22 and 23 in Lake George.
Rapid intervention
Several fire brigades rushed to the spot for rescue operations.
Gov. Kathy Hochul said state police and the Department of Transportation responded immediately.
I join the people of New York in praying for the well-being of all those involved in this horrific incident, and I am deeply grateful for the heroic efforts of our first responders.
Ms. Hochul announced earlier in a press release.
The American Red Cross responded to the crash site and helped passengers find temporary shelter if needed.
The Warrensburg Fire Department and Warren County Veterans Services will provide transportation to the shelters.
State police are investigating.
