When firefighters arrived, they found a man unconscious in the home. They were able to get her out and begin resuscitation maneuvers, explained Kevin Francoeur, Division Chief for the Montreal Fire Protection Service (SIM).
The man was then cared for by paramedics who took him to Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital. His condition was considered critical, Mr. Francois said.

The cause of the disaster was unknown as of evening, but appeared to be accidental, said the City of Montreal Police Department, which is in charge of the investigation.
None of the smoke alarms were working when firefighters arrived, noted Kevin Francoeur, who took the opportunity to remind Montrealers of the importance of checking the operation of their smoke detectors.
