A man who identifies as neither male nor female forced Ontario to pay for vaginoplasty.
The patient, named KS in court documents released by various Ontario media, wanted to have a vaginoplasty, a surgery that creates a vaginal cavity between the rectum and scrotum of a biological human, but without removing the penis.
However, Ontario Health Insurance refused to cover the cost of this surgery, describing it as experimental.
Since 2023, KS has used the courts to overturn Medicare decisions. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice's decision on Wednesday ended the legal battle in favor of KS, so he can pay for the surgery.
In a statement to CTV News, KS didn't hide her joy. “I have been waiting for this day for years. Transgender or non-binary people don't need to ask for permission to exist.
Since no clinic in Canada offers this type of surgery, it will be performed at a clinic in Austin, Texas.
