After being rescheduled from its original September date – which had been postponed due to the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas – the 2023 Academy Museum Gala will take place on December 3 in Los Angeles. Stars including Natalie Portman, Simu Liu, Dua Lipa, Lupita Nyong’o and Selena Gomez walked the red and pink carpet that extended from the entrance and down the museum’s Sphere building. Many of the stars appearing have films that look to be top contenders in the Oscar race; For many, the benefit has become a must-stop along the awards circuit.
Evening – The Film Museum’s third annual benefit, where current exhibits highlight the works of director John Waters and Lourdes Portillo as well as the 1991 film Boys N Hood – It is scheduled to honor four prominent figures in the entertainment industry: Meryl Streep, Michael B. Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, and Sofia Coppola.
Streep will receive the Icon Award, given to an artist whose career has had a notable impact around the world; Michael B. Jordan is honored with the Vantage Award, given to an emerging artist or scholar working to challenge and contextualize dominant narratives around film; Winfrey will receive the Pillar Award, in recognition of leadership and support of the Academy Museum; Coppola will receive the Visionary Award, given to an artist or scholar whose innovations have contributed to the development of cinema as an art.
Co-chairs for the evening are Ava DuVernay, Halle Berry, Ryan Murphy and Dr. Eric Israelian. One of the big moments on the carpet was when Streep and Winfrey stopped to pose together, holding hands for a joint photo. Below, see the best looks from the biggest stars at the 2023 Academy Museum Gala.
