A homeless man from Ottawa drove off the road in a stolen vehicle and pulled into a Chelsea resident's home near Gatineau to enjoy a nice glass of rum early Monday morning.
The unusual story occurred around 4:15 a.m. when the intruder was surprised at a Chelsea man sitting at a table in his home, glass of rum in hand.
The local managed to stay calm and even chatted with his surprise guest.
“The resident called 911 to report the situation to the police. The man, who was not aggressive, identified himself with the owner and simply referred to it as his car [était] Broke, he was looking for a place to go,” said the public defense of the MRC des Collines-de-l'Outauais.
Police arrived at the scene and arrested a 29-year-old suspect.
A brief investigation determined the homeless Ottawa man had stolen a vehicle earlier in the night and traveled to the Chelsea area.
He then attempted to veer off the road while traveling on Route 105.
Not knowing where to go on this freezing night, the homeless man walked for a while and entered a randomly selected house through the front door.
He reportedly went straight to the kitchen to pour himself a glass of wine.
No one was injured during the incident.
The suspect, who has a long history of criminal activity, was due to appear in a Gatineau court on Monday afternoon on various charges including breaking and entering.
The police used the opportunity to remind citizens of the importance of always locking the doors of their homes.
