Mickelson, Playing at LIV Golf At the Royal Greens Golf & Country Club in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, we discussed the ever-changing world of golf brought about by LIV.
“I think going forward you have to choose a side. You have to choose which side you think is going to be successful. And I firmly believe I am on the winning side of how things will develop and shape in the coming years of professional golf,” Mickelson said on Thursday.

“We play against a lot of the best players in the world at LIV and there are a lot of the best players in the world on the PGA Tour. Until the two sides sit down and debate and work on something, both sides go to keep changing and evolving. And I see LIV Golf going up, and I see the PGA Tour going up. Towards the bottom, I like the side I’m on.”
Nearly a year ago, Mickelson first found himself in trouble over comments he made regarding Saudi Arabia, the country that funds LIV Golf.
In an interview with The Fire Pit Collective in November 2021, Mickelson was quoted as saying that despite Saudi Arabia’s human rights record, partnering with the regime was an opportunity to change the way golf works.

“They’re scary to get involved with,” Mickelson Quoted saying. “We know they were killed [Washington Post reporter and U.S. resident Jamal] Khashoggi has an appalling human rights record. They execute people there for being gay. Knowing all this, why am I even thinking about it? Because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour works.”
Comments caused Mickelson to take some time away from golf while the sponsors ended their relationship with Main winner six times.
Mickelson has since said the conversation was unpublishable, which he reiterated on Thursday.
