A recent leak claims that the rumored successor to the PS5 console, the upgraded PS5 Pro, will release later this year, likely in time for the holiday season. If this proves to be true and Rockstar's GTA 6 reaches its targeted launch window of early 2025, that would crown Sony as the best physical console to play one of the most anticipated games of this generation.
There are certainly a lot of “ifs” that have to go right. But considering that GTA 5 broke all-time sales records when it was released in 2013, it can't be understated how huge of an opportunity this could represent for Sony. Especially since Rockstar, unlike many recent releases, does not plan to release GTA 6 on PC and consoles simultaneously. Instead, the developer plans to release an “evolved version” of the game on PC sometime after its initial release date.
Previously, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer dismissed the idea of a mid-cycle update for either the Xbox Series Bloomberg last summer. “That's not the feedback we're getting now. Right now, we're fully prepared with the hardware we have.”
This could give Sony a serious leg up if it goes ahead with a PS5 Pro in time for the release of GTA 6. According to a video this week from YouTuber Moore's Law is deadThe PS5 Pro can hold 67 teraflops of computing power, a very impressive number for an APU boost that appears to have been made possible thanks to machine learning. This can end up with only 33.5 Tflops of “floating point” performance; In comparison, the base PS5 manages just a third of that at 10.28 Tflops. If these specifications prove true, this is a huge technical leap that could help the PS5 Pro rival the graphical power of some of the best gaming PCs.
Due to Sony's estimates 2:1 market position Over on Xbox, the PS5 has already been the main platform players have chosen to experience Rockstar's long-awaited open-world crime game. But being able to play GTA 6 on an upgraded PS5 Pro may give them even more reason to choose Sony's console over Xbox. The PS5 Pro needs a compelling sales pitch to justify its existence, especially as the cheaper Xbox Series S continues to outperform the Xbox Series
