The day was filled with Reggie Fils-Aimé tales. The former president of the New Nintendo America Book, Disable the game, launched in North America today, and we had a chance to read it early. You can read our thoughts On the book here in our review.
However, fans who pre-ordered the audiobook version can access some exclusive bonus content, as Reggie talks with his best friend and Game Awards host, Jeff Kelly. The discussion naturally revolves around – guess what? – mother 3.
This is a game that people often associate with the Reggie period in the Big N, and one that fans have been teasing about for years while working for Nintendo and beyond. Reggie has often manipulated fans in response, once saying that having a The English version of Mother 3 on Twitter. How can we forget the opening Nintendo 2014 Digital E3 Event?
Additional audiobook contents compiled by Everything Nintendo About Mother 3. Reggie spoke to Keighley about Nintendo’s decision that was made before he joined the company. When he was on board, Nintendo was already pressing marketing for the Nintendo DS. Reggie reveals that marketing for his predecessor, groundhas already been taken into account.
“The initial decision not to release the game happened before I joined the company, but certainly after that I had many conversations with Mr. Iwata about this game, about the passion of the fans, and for sure the perspective was the first game on Super Nintendo Entertainment The system didn’t sell all that well. Sure. After I came back to look at it, the marketing wasn’t great. I think it was marketed in a weird way like “this game stinks” or something. It wasn’t really the best marketing behind releasing a new game. Because it didn’t sell well, because Yes there is a lot of time and financial investment in localizing this type of content, it was not really a priority.”
Considering EarthBound’s increased popularity long after the game initially came out, this isn’t too surprising. If you include the fact that the focus was on the DS at the time, and that the Wii was also on the horizon, “it wasn’t really a strong business priority.”
Sure, that’s disappointing to hear, but the conversation about settling mommy 3 didn’t stop there. With the era of the 3DS and Wii U, digital-only purchases had only grown in popularity, and the success of Virtual Console on the Wii was fresh in Nintendo’s minds.
Reggie reveals that he had a chat with Satoru Iwata about bringing the third entry in the Mother series to the 3DS or Wii U via this method. It is proposed to re-release the first game – EarthBound Beginnings – It was an example of dipping your toes in water.
“We actually had conversations about having a bunch of untranslated games, and that it was a purely Japanese game available. And we did that for a number of titles. They did fine. Mr. Iwata and I had that conversation about Mother 3. What happened in the end was we released the first Mother game. It’s called EarthBound Beginnings on the Wii U eShop. That’s the feeling of the conversations that were happening and the thought process.”
Known for its high difficulty, EarthBound Beginnings resembled, in many ways, a prototype build-up to SNES, so it really was a go-to for anyone but die-hard EarthBound fans. And its only Wii U release (even Switch Online), a console with disappointing sales numbers, might have been a bit of a hindrance.
Reggie talks more about Iwata – who was best known for joining production on EarthBound while the project was in tatters and may have been responsible for her rescue – who had multiple discussions with the NoA chief about a potential Mother 3 re-release.
“And who knows? If Mr. Iwata hadn’t passed away, perhaps if the Wii U had done better in the market, Mother 3 might have succeeded by then. So there were talks for sure, but it had to be done in the right way.”
This is clearly Reggie speculating or thinking aloud about what it could have been, but it’s sad that it’s over. Reiji spoke at SXSW about how Iwata’s death drove him to reassess his lifeso the two were clearly close.
Earlier today, we reported on Shinichi Kameoka’s thoughts on why Mother 3 isn’t localized in Kate and Krista Podcast. Fans are still desperate to see an official release of this game, and maybe all this chatter from major names on Nintendo and Brownie Brown will bring something.
