Adult Swim has announced the return for the seventh season of the hit anime Rick and Morty — and the network promises that the new episodes will “raise the bar” following co-creator Justin Roiland’s exit.
The Emmy Award-winning sci-fi comedy series returns Sunday, October 15 at 11 p.m. Like the previous final seasons, the new season will include 10 episodes.
“It happens,” confirmed Michael O’Wellen, President of Adult Swim. Thanks to the talent of the entire cast of the show, we can all enjoy ten new episodes that raise the bar for comedy and animation yet again. This season proves that geniuses are at work. Rick and Morty I just started.”
The news follows Roiland’s firing from the successful global company — as well as being stripped of his lucrative overall deal — in January after he was charged with felony domestic violence in Orange County, California. The accusations were soon followed by revelations that Roiland had sent abusive direct messages to a fan, which gave rise to previously problematic comments in interviews and allegations of workplace conduct issues. But in March, the criminal charges were dropped.
Adult Swim has been looking for new “look-alike” voice talent for the show’s titular characters. The network confirmed that the characters themselves would remain unchanged. No new cast has been announced yet, though Dan Stevens has been cast to star in another Roiland-produced animated series, Hulu. Solar opposites.
