Cryptocurrency company Ripple said on Wednesday that it has obtained a major payments institution license in Singapore, a strategic step towards strengthening its presence in the Asia-Pacific region.

The new development comes less than four months after the Monetary Authority of Singapore granted initial in-principle approval in June. With a full license, Ripple will continue to offer regulated cryptocurrency payment services in Singapore.

“More than 90% of Ripple’s business is located outside the US, and Singapore – and largely the Asia-Pacific region – is one of its fastest growing regions,” the company said.

Ripple said it will continue to prioritize the region’s adoption of its cryptocurrency payment services.

“The headcount in the Singapore office has doubled in the last year because our business in the Asia-Pacific region has really exploded,” Monica Leung, president of Ripple, told CNBC in an interview last month.

Singapore has led cryptocurrency regulation in the region. The country Payment Services Law – which regulates payment services and the provision of cryptocurrency services to the public – has been in force since January 2020.
