Transport and Sustainable Mobility Minister Genevieve Guilbault blamed Ottawa’s lack of funding for Quebec’s road infrastructure, which is considered to be in poor condition at nearly 43%.
“Never has so much money been spent on infrastructure, one-third of which has gone to transport. We are investing more than ever in mobility,” the minister said on Tuesday.
He traveled to Sakune to inaugurate the extension of Highway 70 in the area.
“It’s important for the federal government to reinvest because we can’t fully fund road projects in a vast landscape like Quebec, and that’s not realistic,” he stressed.
Regarding rumors that she may run for the leadership of Quebec’s Liberal Party, Ms. Guilbald did not hesitate to send an inquiry to his federal representative, Pablo Rodriguez.
“We now have a Quebec federal transport minister, and that might help, especially if he goes to the leadership of a provincial party, I’m sure he’ll take up the cause of Quebec’s roads,” he said.
According to the most recent report by the Panel of Experts on the Condition of Roads, nearly 43% of the infrastructure is in poor condition.
The property maintenance deficit has grown year-over-year, reaching $20 billion, and extreme weather events, such as the rains of recent weeks, add to the cost.
