The 2024 Olympic Games kicked off in Paris last week, and if you’re wondering where the latest Mario & Sonic game is, it looks like the series may have come to an end.
Last week, Lee Coker, who has worked on “all the games in the franchise,” announced on social media that the series would end in 2020 with the Tokyo Games. He then shared a photo of himself with the president of the Olympic Committee in 2009, presenting a presentation for the Winter Olympics edition.
“For people asking, there will be no @MarioSonicGames at @Paris2024, the franchise has ended with #MarioAndSonic at @Tokyo2020, I know because I’ve worked on all the games in the franchise.”

He credits Sega and Nintendo as among the many notable gaming companies he has worked with over the years.
Cocker also responded to Some comments on the Olympic video game licensingnoting that he doesn’t think fans will ever see a “character-based” title like Mario & Sonic again. Right now, it appears the only developer with access to the license is nWay, after releasing the free-to-play Olympics GO! mobile title last month. This also happens to be the first Summer Olympics in 30 years With no video game console.
