Russia launched a missile attack on the Ukrainian capital Kiev, wounding at least 10 people and damaging residential buildings and industrial facilities, although military officials said all the missiles were shot down, city officials said.

Serhiy Popko, head of its military administration, said the attack early Thursday was the first large-scale attack in recent weeks targeting the city with ballistic and cruise missiles.

He added: “After a 44-day pause, the enemy launched another missile attack on Kiev.” “All emergency services are working at the sites.”

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least 10 people were injured across the city.

The commander of the Ukrainian Air Forces said that Ukrainian air defenses shot down all 31 Russian missiles that targeted the capital.

Bobko said that the Russian army used strategic bombers and also fired some missiles from its territory while following complex maneuvers in the surrounding areas, with the missiles targeting the city from different directions.

The weather alerts continued for approximately three hours.

Klitschko said that the missile debris hit several residential buildings, industrial sites and a kindergarten.

Residents of a multi-storey building in the central Shevchenkivsky district were evacuated after one of the apartments caught fire. Bobko said that the attack also smashed the windows of several nearby houses and set fire to private cars.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on Western countries to show “political will” to help Kiev.

“Such terrorism continues every day and night. “It is possible to put an end to it through global unity,” Zelensky said, calling on the West to send more air defense systems to Ukraine. This is entirely possible if our partners show sufficient political will.”
