Samsung unveils Galaxy Ring as a way to “simplify everyday wellness”

After teasing the matter (again) yesterday, Samsung has finally done just that We review it Galaxy Ring debuted physically at Mobile World Congress (MWC 2024) and revealed some additional details. The device is of course centered around health and wellness and will come in three colours: platinum silver, gold and ceramic black. It is scheduled to go on sale later this year.

Samsung didn't say much about the Galaxy Ring when it debuted a render of the device at Unpacked last month. All we knew at the time was that it would be a health-oriented wearable device that would rival the Oura, and that it would contain a bunch of unknown sensors.

Journalists weren't allowed to photograph it today, but some additional images from Samsung show it to be a chunky, concave ring roughly the same size as the Oura, according to the attached image (below). The extra size isn't surprising, given the electronics cached inside.

Still, the edge He noted that it was lighter than expected and would be offered in sizes 5 to 13, marked S to XL inside the belt. The battery size (and therefore the time between charges) will vary depending on the size, ranging from 14.5 mAh to 21.5 mAh. Battery life is unknown, but the Oura can last up to seven days between charges.

According to a blog post from Samsung VP Dr. Hon Pak, the ring will track sleep based on heart rate, movement and breathing, and then provide users with advice based on that. The company will also collect data from its partner Natural Cycles, which already tracks fertility on the Galaxy Watch, in line with Oura's main feature.

The Galaxy Ring will also introduce a new tool called My Vitality Score that measures alertness so users can know if they are at their best. Feedback will be available via “reinforcement cards” that provide scientific advice using sleep and other data collected by the device.

The Galaxy Ring will be part of the Samsung Health ecosystem and will be compatible with the Galaxy Watch. This means you'll be able to use both devices simultaneously to track your health and get higher quality data as a result. However, the advantage of a wearable ring is that it is less uncomfortable to sleep with.

We'll learn more in the coming months, including the exact sensor lineup, price, and on-sale date. The Galaxy Ring will only be compatible with Samsung Galaxy phones, though the company plans to make it work with other Android devices later. Buck said compatibility with iOS remains to be determined.
