On Friday night, a woman drove a stolen taxi into commercial buildings in Regina, Saskatchewan.
The story unfolded just after 2:45am on Saturday when police were called to Angus Street in relation to a taxi robbery.
“Police later learned that the suspect entered the taxi and threatened to kill the driver, ejecting the driver and stealing the taxi,” the Regina Police Service said in a statement.
Officers rushed to locate the vehicle and attempted to impound it to no avail. A short time later, the taxi was again seen crashing into the front doors of a business, but again fled the scene.
“For about 15 minutes, the police observed the vehicle moving at low speed and tried to deploy a tire deflation device (an embedded belt) to immobilize the vehicle,” the police force said, referring to the taxi. Then went through the front of a business on Hamilton Street.
The suspect eventually ended his journey with the car into a Cornwall shopping centre.
“The stolen taxi pulled into the main floor of the Cornwall Centre. Officers entered the mall on foot and began approaching the taxi, which began moving again and passed the mall’s north entrance near Saskatchewan Drive. The taxi got stuck on the stairs and a 32-year-old woman was taken into custody,” the Regina Police Department said in a statement to damaged business owners.
The suspect, 32-year-old Dakota Lewison, has been charged with robbery, dangerous driving, mischief and several other charges. He is expected to appear on Monday morning.
