Smoke bomb and lobster theft: Restaurant targeted by unusual vandalism

A man determined to take live crabs smashed the window of a Victoria, British Columbia restaurant and stole the shellfish, only to return with a smoke bomb after failing the first time.

CTV News reported Friday that the Victoria Police Department released a report on two incidents that allegedly took place at the Ocean Garden restaurant in Chinatown last Wednesday.

The restaurant identified itself in a Facebook post, although officials did not name the establishment.

“This morning, around 8 o’clock, a man took it upon himself to break down our front door and then steal our live crabs … yes, our live crabs …” we read on the restaurant’s page. Not our cash register, not our liquor or our appliances. Our crabs. ยป

Fortunately for the family restaurant, a witness confronted the intruder, who ran away leaving behind the crabs he was trying to steal.

“Officers identified, located and arrested the suspect within two hours of the incident,” Victoria Police said in a statement, according to CTV News.

The suspect was reportedly released that day under several conditions, including not returning to the facility.

However, he returned to the scene with a smoke bomb around 2pm on Wednesday, CTV News reported. Authorities found and arrested him Thursday.

He faces charges of mischief and breach of probation for the smoke bomb incident, but is said to be facing no charges for the attempted crab theft at this time.
