The 34-year-old, a plumber by profession, said he had a job at a young woman’s apartment. After initially refusing to let him inside, the suspect returned an hour later saying he had to work in the downstairs apartment. The victim let him inside.

After starting work in the kitchen, Mr. Bertus sought a good relationship with the young woman. He approached her and asked if she lived alone. The victim pushed him twice and threatened to call the police. She finally made him leave the place.

During the SPVM investigation, the police said in a statement that the suspect may have used the scheme to kill others.

Mr. Bertus is of North African descent. He has black hair and eyes, is 1.80 m tall and weighs 67 kg. He speaks French.

The man appeared in Montreal court on March 28, where he was charged with sexual assault. He was released on parole.
