The mother of a woman whose body was paraded in the streets by Hamas has asked for help finding her daughter.
A video has been circulating on social media showing German tattoo artist Shani Luke on the back of a pickup truck after the Palestinian militant group Hamas attacked Israel on October 7.
Luke was attending an outdoor “Peace Festival” concert near Kibbutz Orem when the area was targeted. First, rockets were fired, then gunmen appeared and opened fire on the crowd. CNN reported. Party attendees told the outlet that people immediately began fleeing, passing bodies on the ground as they tried to escape the massacre.
The attack and resulting conflict led to the deaths of hundreds of Israelis and Palestinians, with the Israeli Prime Minister declaring war.
A video of a young woman with pigtails on the back of a pickup truck surrounded by Hamas soldiers began circulating on social media shortly after the attack. In it, she appears stripped of her underwear, with her legs bent at unnatural angles, while one of the soldiers holds her hair. People were also seen spitting on her body.
Her face is not visible, but her distinctive braids and tattoos helped her family identify her as Luke. According to the Washington Post.
Luke’s mother, Ricarda Luke, shared a video that was also circulated on social media, in which she asked for more information about what happened to her daughter, who is in her early 20s and holds dual German-Israeli citizenship.
She said: “This morning, the Palestinian Hamas movement kidnapped my daughter Shani Luke, a German citizen who was with a tour group in southern Israel. She sent me a video where I could clearly see my daughter unconscious in a car with Palestinians.” He said in German, which was translated by Insider. “Please send any help or news. Thank you.”
Tom Weintraub Locke, Locke’s cousin, spoke to The Washington Post, saying the family tried to contact Locke after news of the attack spread.
“We knew she was at the party. She didn’t respond,” he said.
It is currently unknown whether she is alive.
“We have some kind of hope,” Tom said. “Hamas is responsible for itself and for others.”
On Luke’s Instagram account, where she has 36,000 followers, she describes herself as a tattoo artist and hairdresser. Her posts show her traveling the world, attending festivals and spreading spiritual messages.
The comments under her photos became filled with messages wishing she were alive, and condemning the war and the actions of Hamas fighters in the video.
One comment read: “One day you are having fun at the festival, and the next day the whole world is watching your lifeless body behind the pickup truck on the Internet… scary and brutal.” “My only wish is that those who did this do not escape punishment.”
