Netflix continues to build out the “Stranger Things” franchise, with the streaming giant ordering an animated series set in the show’s universe.
Almost all details about the show are kept under wraps, apart from the fact that it’s developed by Eric Robles and Flying Bark Productions. Robles previously created the animated shows Random! Comics, Fanboy & Chum Chum, and Glitch Techs.
“Stranger Things” is produced by Duffer Brothers executives via Upside Down Pictures alongside Robles of Flying Bark as well as Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps. Upside Down and 21 Rolls are currently the subject of blanket deals at Netflix.
“We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things movie in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons we grew up loving, and seeing that dream come true has been so exciting,” the Duffer brothers said in a statement. We couldn’t be more amazed at what Eric Robles and team have come up with – the scripts and artwork are amazing, and we can’t wait to share more with you! The adventure continues…”
Stranger Things has proven to be a worldwide hit and one of the most popular original series on Netflix since its debut in 2016. It has been renewed for a fifth and final season in February 2022.
Netflix has announced plans for a live-action spin-off series and a theatrical run in July 2022, with Duffers Upside Down Pictures forming at that time. There are no details available about the live-action spin-off, though the Duffers have previously said it won’t focus on characters like Eleven or Steve Harrington. It was revealed in March 2023 that the stage show will take place in Hawkins in 1959 and will debut in London’s West End.
The Duffers are also working on a live-action TV version of the Japanese manga and anime series Death Note. The series was previously adapted into a live-action Netflix movie in 2017. They are also working on a series adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s book “The Talisman” alongside Amblin Entertainment and Steven Spielberg’s Paramount Television.
