Makokois, 26, who drugged and sexually assaulted at least six women, was finally sentenced to nine years in prison on Friday.
“[Depuis l’agression], one of the victims claims to sleep fully clothed. She has night terrors and takes medication for generalized anxiety. Every morning, she makes sure her pants are buttoned properly,” Judge Claude LeBland commented, quoting a statement from one of the victims, Mylene Tronto.
Handcuffed in the accused’s box, Samuel Bourke kept his eyes glued to the floor as he heard these words, which stemmed from the sexual abuse of some of his former associates.
During the trial, at least six women testified they were abused by Borg, some of whom were drugged by pouring pills into their glasses or even directly into their mouths while they slept.
In his ruling, the judge listed a number of aggravating factors, including dealing with other victims, breach of trust and repeated sexual assaults.
“The accused presents an identity with selfishness and a search for immediate gratification. Shows a lack of sensitivity to the feelings of others. […] And he has little capacity for remorse,” opined Justice LeBland, citing the Pinnell Institute report.
He cites the young age of the accused and his dysfunctional family as mitigating factors.
Borg will remain in custody for the next four years pending legal proceedings, as he has been in custody since his arrest.
