(Ottawa) The armed forces are sounding the alarm about its recruiting woes: There are no recruits to fill thousands of vacant positions in its ranks.

The problem is so bad that the senior officer in charge of recruitment and training describes the situation as a crisis.
Brigadier General Krista Brady said the Army has received only half of the applications it needs to meet its goal of recruiting 5,900 new recruits this year.
One in ten military jobs are vacant. With fewer people to climb the ladder, this shortage will have ramifications for future rankings as well.
Hiring managers understand this problem well and try to find solutions. They plan to provide financial incentives and improve work-family balance. They also want to improve the perception of the military among the people.
The Canadian Armed Forces also wants to improve the inclusion of underrepresented groups such as women and indigenous peoples in their ranks.
