As Andre 3000 famously declared: “The South has something to say.”
That sentiment is on full display in Hulu's new documentary, “Freaknik: The wildest party never toldThe film chronicles the rise and fall of Atlanta's popular spring break experience that served as a celebration of black culture in the 1990s.
When Hulu announced it would be making a movie about the event, many black people of a certain generation were concerned about having embarrassing moments for their children and coworkers to watch. While there certainly is Guys who have some explaining to doIt's not as controversial as everyone expected. There are clips about how things went from a fun party to a dangerous event where the women were not safe. But overall it tells the story of young black men coming together to celebrate their culture in a city that symbolizes black joy.
At 1 hour and 22 minutes, it's a quick watch, but we've saved you some time and have a handy list of the five most surprising revelations, aka How to Spot a Freaknik Veteran?
They won't get rid of the video camera
The events of Freaknik took place long before the advent of social media, so the only footage comes from news reports and videos captured on old school camcorders. That's right kids, once upon a time, you had to carry a video camera over your shoulder and change tapes to keep recording.
In the film, many of these videos show men constantly assaulting women, many of them trying to have a good time with their girls. Also, these pickup lines range from cheesy to offensive. Yes, some things never change.
This rule also applies if you have an aunt who seems overly attached to the daisy duchesses in the back of her closet.
They refuse to use the word Twerking
We will never deny that twerking is an art form. However, long before it was called a booty shake, we called it a booty shake. If you know someone who's adamantly against the word twerking, it might be because they did their fair share of it during Freaknik.
If you need a primer or examples, there are plenty on offer in the film.
They get emotional when the “player's ball” appears.
One of the most amazing stories to come out of the movie is that Outkast had a huge breakthrough thanks to Freaknik. When they were first starting out, the group invested all their money into making cassette samplers and distributed them in traffic jams. This led to the success of “Player's Ball” and Outkast became the flag bearer for Southern hip-hop.
They have a deep hatred for the Olympic Games
Although Freaknik's early years were about young people enjoying their freedom and living their best lives, things changed when Atlanta became the host city for the 1996 Olympics. The city's leadership had to prove it could control a major event, and decided that Freaknik would serve as a Test her. Her interference turned out to make things worse for business owners and visitors. The event never recovered from the damage caused by unnecessary closures, traffic jams and heavy police presence.
They have an irrational fear of traffic
No one likes traffic, but sitting on the highway for hours is enough to turn anyone off for life from this mentally exhausting sport. In the early days, these traffic jams seemed like extra parties. In later years, they were used to stop fun and became dangerous for women. Additionally, Atlanta residents were trapped in their homes while Freaknik was taking place.
Freaknik has a well-deserved controversial reputation. From over-sexualizing young black women, to the chaos it brought to the city, to the sexual harassment and assault of women, there were some bad experiences that resulted. However, the event began as a celebration of black joy. For several years, it has given young black men a place to explore themselves and appreciate their culture without judgment.
No matter how many times someone tries to re-trigger an event called Freaknik, the original sentiment can never be restored.
“Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told” is now available to stream on Hulu.
