BOSTON — Keep an eye out for a potentially dazzling display in the sky Saturday night. The northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, are expected to be visible in northern New England.
The forecast map shows aurora borealis possible in northern parts of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Auroras are “possible” in Massachusetts and southern New England, and even as far south as Washington, D.C

“If you’re a night owl and have a good vantage point to the north, check for the possibility of the northern lights appearing, especially across northern New England but even into the Worcester Hills,” WBZ-TV meteorologist Jacob Wyckoff said. It also offers some advice for photographers. “Open those shutters and let those long exposures capture some of those northern lights.”
The forecast for the area should be perfect for viewing the aurora borealis, with clear skies and only a sliver of a crescent moon.
What causes the northern lights?
We can sometimes see the northern lights when solar energy from the Sun collides with the Earth’s magnetic field, creating different waves of colors.
