The Pixel Watch 2 teaser shows off a new crown and sensor design

Google just released Teaser video for the Pixel Watch 2And while the smartwatch looks quite similar to the original, there are some notable differences, such as a new crown, IP68 rating, and a completely different set of sensors.

In the run-up to the Made by Google launch event on October 4th in New York, Google leaked glimpses of its upcoming Pixel lineup, including a Thursday close-up of the Pixel 8 Pro and the much smaller Pixel 8. On the Pixel Watch 2 it was relatively fleeting. This new video, while short, is the first time we’ve been able to confirm some real differences in terms of design. (Yes, I’ve replayed the video a few times and used my Pixel Watch as a reference.)

For starters, the biggest difference is the sensor array. The original Pixel Watch had a border of ECG electrodes, but had a slim, bean-shaped array that contained rectangular optical sensors. On the Pixel Watch 2, you can clearly see a more circular design with smaller LEDs. Rumors so far have indicated that the Pixel Watch 2 will have a continuous electrical activity sensor in Sense 2, so this could be reason for a redesign.

You can also see a glimpse of the IP68 rating. The original Pixel Watch has a “water resistant to 50 meters” rating. This isn’t too surprising, as the original was also rated for water resistance up to 5ATM, which is generally what is needed to be considered swimproof. IP68 at least confirms the dust resistance level as well.

Finally, the crown looks more flush with the display. On the original watch, you can see a small cutout. Other than that, the Pixel Watch 2 clearly has a similar overall design to the original. This seems to indicate that any major upgrades may come from software or internal components. For example, the Pixel Watch 2 is expected to choose the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Plus platform instead of Samsung’s last-generation Exynos chip.

In any case, we do not have to wait too long. Google says you’ll be able to pre-order the Pixel Watch 2 on October 4th, and the company is hosting a big Pixel event on the same day.
