A teenager who was hit by a motorist while getting off a bus in Abitibi-Temiskamingu Tuesday, the day after his thirteenth birthday, has little chance of survival and his family is considering organ donation.
“News that my grandson is brain dead. We are waiting for organ donation. He’s going to save lives, my beautiful Nathan! Heartbreaking publication Nathalie Macameau revealed on Wednesday morning that the conflict involving her grandson took less than 24 hours.
“Please be careful around school buses,” he said in another post.
Upon release
On Tuesday, sophomore Nathan Mackamew was returning home on the school bus after his day at Amos Middle School.
At around 4:30 p.m., the teenager, who had celebrated her 13th birthday the previous day, got off the school bus near a curve on Route 111 at the intersection of Rue du Faubourg.
He was then trying to cross the road to go home when he was hit by a southbound vehicle.
According to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), the school bus had its flashers on, but the vehicle apparently did not stop.
About forty students inside the bus witnessed the tragic scene.
The Harigana School Service Center clarified on Facebook that it has taken steps to support students and staff at Nathan High School.
Donations to the family
The young man was taken to hospital in critical condition.
According to his grandmother’s release, he unfortunately has no brain function.
His loved ones are currently at his bedside at CHU Sainte-Justine in Montreal.
On Wednesday morning, a friend of the victim’s family also started A crowd funding campaign to help them.
“Now, Nathan is fighting for his life. Since he was rushed to Ste-Justin, we chose a way to let his parents go to bed as long as they wanted. The funds will go to them in full to help them cover travel expenses,” Myleen Berube, an organizer of the campaign, wrote on the website, which has already surpassed $16,000 in donations.
“slow down”
Mme Bérubé describes young Nathan as a “wonderful” young man with a big heart.
“Please be generous and above all slow down on the roads!” She finished the message.
Also, the driver of the vehicle, a 72-year-old resident of Taschereau, was also taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Investigators and reconstruction experts were sent to the scene to try to establish the causes and circumstances of the accident.
“If there really is a traffic violation, there may be charges,” said SQ’s Sergeant Nancy Fournier.
