Weather: Snow appears in Chagune

A light white carpet of snow was seen on Saturday morning in the upper reaches of Saguenay, particularly in Parc des Mont-Valin and Parc des Laurentides.

Temperatures were ideal for this first glimpse of winter’s impending arrival, with temperatures varying between 2 and 3 degrees Celsius overnight Friday through Saturday, according to data from Environment Canada.

About two centimeters of snow fell on the ground. “But it melts so much, the snow doesn’t stay on the ground,” Environment Canada meteorologist Gregory Yang said in an interview with the QMI agency.

Although the first snowflakes always make Quebecers shiver and remind them that winter is just around the corner, October 8th is no surprise in this part of the province.

“Snowfall is common at this time of year in the highlands, and temperatures remain below freezing in the highlands,” Yang said.

A far cry from the lowest temperature of -3.7 degrees Celsius recorded on October 8, 1993, the temperature in the Jonquier sector was around 3 degrees Celsius on Saturday morning.

Colder weather is expected to continue in the coming days, with a 60% chance of rain or snow overnight, especially Saturday into Sunday.

Note that the first appearance of snow was in mid-September in Fairmont and Schaefferville on the North Shore.
